Every voice on Iconic Voices is AI-generated — never a lost archival recording. Where the author's own recordings survive, the voice is a restoration built from them: our pipeline analyses the real prosody, accent, breathing and cadence, then reads a text the author never recorded. Where no recording of the author survives, the voice is a studio AI voice designed for that edition — an interpretation, not a reconstruction. There is no third kind: no human actor performs on this catalogue.
How the voices are built
- Source material — the texts we narrate are public domain, and voice reference comes from archival recordings and writings held by institutions such as the Library of Congress, British Library, BBC Archives and Internet Archive. Those recordings are on their own copyright schedule, not the text's — each voice page names the source it was built from and what we can establish about its status.
- AI-generated interpretation — our pipeline analyzes prosody, accent, breathing, and cadence, then generates new speech inspired by those patterns.
- Labelling — every voice carries one of exactly three labels, on the product page and before you press play: Restored from real recordings, Studio AI voice, or Disputed historical recording. Those three strings are the whole taxonomy; nothing on this site is described any other way.
Texts
All MVP titles are in the public domain (published before 1930 in most jurisdictions, or explicitly released). No copyrighted works are reconstructed without a license.
